Great Northern’s Appleton Facility Earns SFI® Certification
Chain of Custody Certification Guarantees Sustainability in Packaging

APPLETON, Wis.,
Aug.12, 2009—The Appleton, Wis., facility of Great Northern Corporation, an industry leader in consumer packaging and displays, has achieved certification to the independent Sustainable Forestry Initiative® chain-of-custody standard.
Certification of the Appleton facility will allow Great Northern and its customers to better service the increasing market demand for forest products that come from responsible sources, said Supply Chain Manager Pat Lovesee.
“Most of our customers want to know they are working with companies that exhibit sound environmental practices. This certification means we are able to demonstrate to our customers that we purchase paper from sustainable sources and that we are able to guarantee the chain of custody of those materials as they move through our plant and processes,” said Lovesee.
“At a time when just 10 percent of the world’s forests are independently certified, Great Northern Corporation joins a growing community of companies, landowners, and social and environmental organizations who have demonstrated their environmental commitment and leadership by achieving SFI certification,” said SFI Inc. President and CEO Kathy Abusow.
With more than 160 million acres certified across North America, the non-profit SFI sustainable forestry certification program is one of the largest in the world. To achieve SFI chain-of-custody certification, companies must have a tracking system in place that allows them to tell customers the amount of certified, uncertified and recycled content in the forest products they buy, use or sell.
Great Northern Corporation designs, manufactures and distributes packaging solutions and point-of-sale display programs for industrial, commercial and retail products. Its operations include: Consumer Packaging & Display, temporary and permanent displays, point-of-sale packaging and fulfillment services; Commercial Packaging, corrugated and custom packaging; Laminations, VBoard® edge protection; and Rollguard, protective packaging systems for rolled and cylindrical products.
Headquartered in Appleton, Wis., Great Northern has more than 950 employees and operations in seven states. More information is available at www.greatnortherncorp.com.
