Great Northern wins eight OMA awards, including one gold, at GlobalShop 2011

APPLETON, Wis., April 6, 2011 – Great Northern Corporation took home a total of eight awards, including one gold award, from GlobalShop 2011, the world's largest annual retail design and marketing event.

Point of Purchase Advertising International (POPAI) announced the winners of its 53rd annual Outstanding Marketing at Retail Achievement (OMA) Awards Competition during GlobalShop 2011, which was held March 28–30 in Las Vegas. Entries were judged on design, innovation, interactivity and the proven ability to lift sales.

Great Northern Corporation won one gold award, as well as three silver awards and four bronze awards, for the following displays:

GOLD AWARD

The merchandiser enables PetSmart® consumers to create a personalized variety pack of Fancy Feast products and increases the average number of cans purchased from 24 cans to 33 cans, with an additional three cans free, for 36 total. The shelf dispenser with coupon pad, and the tray graphics educate the buyer about the promotion and how to assemble and load the available tray. The tray fits inside the PetSmart cart seat to ease loading and unloading of the product. The gravity-fed dispenser keeps the product trays organized during the life of the promotion. The promotion outperformed all expectations and has led to the inclusion of two additional campaigns for other product lines in 2011.

SILVER AWARD

This display provides a fully interactive experience, created by one large red blinking button, to demonstrate how shoppers can take control of their HDTV and harness the power of the Internet to find and watch anything they can imagine. Traditional permanent metal, plastic and electronic components combine with temporary corrugate and pallet materials to provide the necessary support for the product and TV, while creating broader appeal for the product, which would normally be sold in a more expensive environment than a club store. Aiming the TV and electronics inward, toward the aisle, instead of facing out on the main shopping floor, protects the more fragile components. The interactive portion of this display was developed by Darko.

Flip imagery, created with a large-scale, offset-printed lenticular panel, quickly communicates the indoor/outdoor use of the product and creates stopping power in the aisle. A "Save $3.00 NOW" tear-off coupon further entices customers to purchase the product. The corrugated header, with printed vinyl dangler is pre-attached to the main body of the display via flute wire to ensure a successful and easy in-store execution. The minimal footprint of the floor display allows for placement in multiple locations, eliminating the need to leverage expensive end-cap or inline space.

The simple column structure with minimal footprint creates an impactful and compelling floor display to merchandise the newly released three-step energy and hydration system from Gatorade. A dramatic full-body image of Olympic Gold Medalist Usain Bolt is clearly visible from a down-line position. Product trays, in contrasting white, extend out to enable consumers to shop from two sides of the display, while their tunnel design allows ambient light into the structure. The display sits in a black vacuum-formed styrene tray to reduce water damage and extend the life of the merchandiser. The G Series® Pro Products are selling four times the level of those products promoted on shelf. The design of this display was co-developed with WD Partners.

The high-impact graphics and shape of this display introduce consumers to a new line of artificial bait from Rapala, offered at Dick's Sporting Goods stores. Product ships on hooks, held in place by a laminated backwall that prevents tear out, which enables the retailer to instantly set up the display and have it ready to shop. Informational side and bottom panels educate consumers on the different types of bait available. This display sold out of product within two weeks after placement in the store.

The main body of the display arrives pre-assembled and preloaded with product. Executed in minutes, the four-sided dimensional header with large-scale graphics is visible across the store from 360 degrees. The colorful larger-than-life characters can be seen from multiple viewing angles to entice both adults and children, while the products are arranged in cubbyholes for easier shopping in all directions. Products sold through within one week and had to be replenished weekly to keep up with demand during the life cycle of the display.

Deviating from the traditional heavy-black color scheme used by Lexmark, the display features very bright graphics and uniquely shaped panels to attract consumer attention. To work around power restrictions on displaying a live printer, the structure features a large four-color lug-on that highlights the physical attributes of the printer and new brand messaging. The display helps to educate consumers on the product without needing a sales associate to explain everything about the printer. This display ships completely assembled, and only requires store personnel to stock one box in the display.

The pre-packed display executes in-store in less than two minutes and features a robust corrugate design that easily supports restocking with store inventory. The litho-mounted graphics deliver maximum clarity and impact, while the curved lines of the structure create visual interest and demand attention at retail.
